American Idol Contestant Harrangued over Nude Photos

I don’t know the story behind this, and to be honest I don’t want to. I’m not one of those who gets thrills from being a voyeur when regards the lives of others.

Just the briefing in the basics here is enough to drive the point home 10 times over. Nothing you post on line is ever private…nothing! If anyone has read it or copied it, they have the ability to crack you over the head with it later.

Paradigms of the “one-stop tech shop”

An entry on the blog of Christopher Hawkins, “Suspicious of the ‘One-Stop’ Tech Shop“, concluded with the following question: “Or is my own view that no one small company can possibly do 5 different computer-related disciplines well just a misinformed prejudice on my part?”

I think I can answer that question. I live in a small town (that’s where he’s seen these shops). I’m a technically-inclined person and I don’t live very far from the city, and yet I used such a shop twice myself, even though I’m fully comfortable with the under-warranty service I’ve gotten from Best Buy.

In my case, there is a sports/hobbies shop. (more…)

IT Recruitment and Employment Agencies

I came across this great commentary by an Australian programmer. It sounds like they use agencies to find IT persons a lot more there than here, but it should serve as fair warning. Especially as employment agencies here in the U.S. can be so horrible.

When I was between jobs (I am not in IT yet, just starting in school), I used an employment agency to find temporary work to pay the bills during the summer while I looked for a permanent job that would work with school hours. They sent me off to a place that does not train new hires on weekends because they don’t have the staff to spare to show you around. The prospective employer said they had done this many times and called the agency to tell them they’d done it again. (more…)
